Abu Kafan Abu Kafan is a long narrow reef, 90 minutes until 2 hours far away from Safaga. It means translated “The depth”. When you will diver over here then you will know why. The steep slope is going straight down more then 100 m. In the north extend a plateau seawards with two coral heads. In the south is a big and colorful erg which is combine with the reef in around 18 m. Beyond it, it seems that the reef is going without end to the south around 30 m. Sea-Conditions Like all outside laying reefs from Safaga the way over there can be a little bit restless but after you arrived you are laying there very good protected. Currents are coming from the north-west and they are weak until flying. Dive-Plan If you have the possibility then you should make a drift dive along the north-plateau and the eastern wall. A lot of people which are coming from here classify this plateau higher then the plateau of the Panorama Reef (take care from a counter-current from east to west). If the weather doesn’t allow this, then you should dive at the south-side of the reef starting from the berth passing the south ergs and if the current allow this, among the east wall until you are coming back to the reef.
